Criticism

For over thirty years this painter from Normandy, Lucien Cowley, has proven that an artist principally interested in post-impressionism at the School of Fine Arts in Rouen is able to get the most out of the teaching while still learning to demonstrate their true personality little by little and without betraying their initial sources. Ever since, Lucien Cowley powerfully marks his impressions with a graceful and broad brush-stroke and warm tints. He captures the brilliance of reflections in water and the sky, and is unable to forego the fresh allure of the surrounding nature and its picturesque quality. With him, everything is in the balance of the landscape, and even if his audacity and technique allow him beautiful perspectives, Lucien Cowley privileges the harmony in both shapes and colours with ample modernism to guarantee his relevance to our times. All this is thanks to the impact made by a figurative style kneaded with emotion, conviction, and receptive sensitivity, which is as present in his Normandy landscapes as in his floral arrangements and his generous and radiant still-lifes.
