  • Criticism

Having lived in Normandy and Senegal, Odile Rousselet has spent over thirty years between two artistic civilizations. She has always shown a brilliant and convincing synthesis of the two, combining the sumptuous with the poetic, fluidity with buildings, and sensuality of shape with the evocation of dream. All it took was for a person from Fréville, Croix-Mare, and former student of Jean-Claude Mauger at the École de Beaux-Arts in Rouen, to identify with Senegal for her to become the artist representative of a contemporary African art and modify the current conceptions of tapestry, painting, and sculpture with slender grace. And so Odile Rousselet presents us with a superb and warm harmony of paper-fibers-paint, the balance of which is carefully construed around the picturesque quality of the chosen themes. With this artist, Africa becomes light through her undeniable technical mastery that blends with the energy emanating from her materials and colours. The vitality and brilliance turn the customary vision on its head through the expressive way in which she interprets sources and symbols. At the same time, the artist’s imagination transforms and conveys an art that is different yet incredibly fascinating, and where Odile Rousselet’s first vocation as a ceramist can at times be seen.
