Criticism

There is a slight problem: I do not know whether to describe her as a “sculpteur” in the masculine or a “sculptrice” in the feminine. I presume that Marianne MONNOYE-TERMEER would prefer the term “sculpteur” and, after all, the fruit of her work represents sculptures, and that is where lies the admirable essence of her true talent for carving directly into the stone. By prolonging an ancestral tradition, this Dutch artist conserves the natural shape of the stone while her imagination and intelligence guide the chisel with instinct and passion. In her work, priority is given to the beings, faces and postures, and the primitive shape of the mineral modifies the expression and realism while revealing the essence: love and emotion. The strange is also very present in this type of work and influences the appearance of these timeless sculptures. But they are conferred with the precious and magical gift that is a masterfully deciphered raw space, and so the artist decisively transforms them into charming and appealing works of art. The real and the shapeless can at last live together within the various iridescent minerals that are either left rough or finely polished to enhance the well-executed carving. Exceptional in terms of its creativity, the work is both tangible and dreamlike, yet always captivating.
