Criticism

As a painter, writer-poet, and author-composer, Basque artist Xabier Soubelet has left no stone unturned to affirm his personality, and the creations from his workshop-gallery in Arizkun perfectly reflect his talent when they are presented in expositions and renowned private collections in France or abroad. Generally painted with oil on wood, his works have undergone a remarkable evolution since his artistic beginnings in 1975. Commencing with an impressionistic style that was soundly built around a simple and powerful picturesque portrayal of regional sites in all seasons, the development has brilliantly resulted in a generous and expressive analysis that is masterfully uncluttered, yet also attentive to motifs’ symbolic values and vitality. This energy is in turn determined by the well thought out magic that the fine palette of persevering colours inspires. His broad brushstroke showcases the reverberations of light and metamorphoses visions and thoughts into masterful compositions. Seemingly effortlessly, Xabier Soubelet captivates the onlooker with the aura of debonair mystery about his works, which nevertheless harbour strength and a rich measure of resolution. Their poetic quality is distinguished by the artist’s temperament with panache, calling to mind the renewed and dynamic figurative style that contemporary art proposes.
