Criticism

In the course of my artistic peregrinations, I’ve rarely dealt with an artist who defines herself as “one hundred percent self-taught” as markedly as Arlette Hurel. Of course, there’s no lack of self-taught creators in gallery circles, but rare are those who refer so highly to the decision to teach themselves their art without the help of mentors. In the case of this artist from Normandy, the definition becomes a true profession of faith and character, subjecting all tendencies and authoritative inspirations to public scorn in order to progress through the muddled world of visual arts. This she does with determination and audacity, the combination of which forms no less than an immense space of freedom, allowing Arlette Hurel to evolve and change as she pleases. She exalts her works as her thoughts and purposeful determination dictate. There is therefore a firm elaboration in her paintings, collages and photos that escapes unified creativity, instead being based on the artist’s experience and experimentation, particularly her passions, moods and daydreams. Thanks to these, she handles her creations with total freedom in terms of colour, matter, lines and masses, which in turn at times give rise to a motif full of poetry even while remaining a derivative of the mysteries of geometry and the imagination. This is strange and interesting, because in this exciting ensemble, Arlette Hurel expresses her surprising vision of a veritable return to the roots, which is in turn at the service of the artist’s unprecedented technique and appealing conception of composition.
