Criticism

It is widely accepted that art has no boundaries. The same limits apply to artists’ personalities, and to me, it seems that Martine Desgrippes-Devaux represents a captivating example of this definition in terms of the bright diversity of her desires and subjects. This teacher, writer and poet, with her enlightening and spiritual language, is also a fine painter, full of impetus and charm in view of her works. Even while nurturing the various visual arts practices, she had the intelligence to let her personality overcome the rigid rules of technique and superbly consider her creative approach as a very personal path, offering her the unique satisfaction of expressing herself according to her literary and pictorial inclinations. With her skillful handling of brushes and knives, Martine Desgrippes-Devaux exhibits her works with a real desire for human contact, which is reflected in her creations. Always well finished, her paintings with their pure colours capture the observer’s attention through the very simply portrayal of just the right detail. This, added to their aura of mystery, confers them a charm which is unforgiving and without vain pretension, whether it be a question of the sumptuous Venice, landscapes, or a Normandy scene with calm picturesque effects. Faces and graceful feminine figures are imbued with a dreamlike quality in surrealistic and generous décors, while her lines of research easily rub shoulders with her daring finds in terms of curious animal portraits and symbolic seasons.
