Rare are the painters who, like Marcel Peltier, will have been so familiar with illness, pain, and suffering throughout their artistic career, or will have had his talent, something which this Normandy painter unceasingly mastered and questioned, without losing an ounce of his personality or drive. The strapping and seemingly robust Marcel Peltier fully assumed the permanent burden that doubt and creativity imposed. This made him a painter of mystery despite the power in his works, which overturned classicism in order to explore the depths of imagination and reality. This he did across the range of subjects he chose, enhancing their expression with a bold and lively palette. With him, art-lovers rediscover not only the magic of his Venetian travels, the vitality of his horse races and the tragic solemnity of his portraits, but also the poetry in appealing and dazzling floral compositions, the simplicity of still-lifes, the seascapes with their threatening skies, and even misty ports. And that’s not forgetting his churches, or his archways with their surreal brightness, revealing the spirituality that is linked to natural love of colour for this secretive artist and forever lucid creator.
