Criticism

An autodidactic artist well-versed in numerous techniques including oil painting and intaglio printmaking, in which she excels, Colette Sagy has, over her long career, enriched an already fertile creativity. Characterised by a desire for constant renewal as much on a technical as on a thematic and stylistic level, her path has been punctuated by many exhibitions in her home region of Normandy. An abstract painter who could easily be described as expressionist, Colette Sagy has a keen sense of frontality in pictorial space and creates hierarchy through the use of harmonious blends which she applies in large brushstrokes. The tension conferred to her paintings stems as much from the skilful interpenetration of shapes as from the rhythmic balance of colours, which are bright and quiver with light. Experimentation with lighting effects remains a constant in Colette Sagy’s creative approach. Her most recent pieces seem to be the end result of an exploration into all the possibilities for pulling this light from deepest darkness, evocative of ancestral forests or underground worlds. If the formal abstract appearance of her paintings is striking, then the title given to each of them clearly indicates the artist’s intention to convey to the observer her inner symbolic world, from her mental representation of nature right through to her portrayal of the deepest existential questions. For this reason, with its characteristic dynamism, generous brushstroke, and dazzling, bright palette, the work that Colette Sagy presents is bound to appeal.
