Criticism

Although he was born in Normandy in Belbeuf, it was during his thirty years spent in Senegal that Roland Hibert perfected his hyper-realist way of painting, which allowed him, when he came back to Normandy, to exhibit at the best salons and obtain the most prestigious awards, the most recent being the Achille Fould-Stirbey prize, which was attributed by the Académie des Beaux Arts at the French Artists’ Salon. The prize-giving took place under the academy’s renowned dome, which is no small thing for a painter. But it is clear that the path he follows allows us to make the astounding discovery of a universe that sends shivers down our spines before appealing to us, and this is due to the fact that the effects explored by this expert hand and remarkable mind results in great art. With audacity and magic, Roland Hibert paints the strangest scenes in which either lavish or derelict structures dominate the landscapes. He associates his talent with his imagination in meticulous representations of funny buildings, phantasmagorical tropical forests, and strange caves. In fact, there is a whole symbolism surrounding a life and nature that mankind strives to degrade after having transcended it. But, thanks to his brilliant technique and composition, the artist draws poetry from the motifs depicting a reality that he magnifies in majestic fashion.
