Criticism

Jean-Louis Lemaire is an exemplary figurative painter, showing impeccable perspectives steeped in perfectly harmonised colours, and a resolute brushstroke that is particularly expressive. Jean-Louis Lemaire is never afraid of displaying his talent in a wide range of subjects, into which he breathes a particularly brilliant dynamism and atmosphere. This is as true of his admirable and well-expressed landscapes as it is of his quivering floral compositions and his imposing still-lifes. And that’s not forgetting either his flair for nudes and portraits, revealing a racy and sensual confidence, or the authority with which he treats warm sequences of jazz musicians. But this artist is not devoid of his own lines of research and, without renouncing the power of his colour blends, he has purified their nuances and authenticated the contrasts. This development has offered him a new freedom, a degree of audacity in the domain of composition, as well as a new and dynamic emancipation. Strength, culture and sensitivity resurface within a world that is aquiver with irrefutable precision stemming from the knowledge and fundamental talent of this exceptional drawer.
