Michel LARIVIERE: His name has been in my address book for years, so much did I delight in viewing his work at the Salon of Rouen and at the exhibitions at the Galerie Truffier in the town of Andelys. Writing about the work of this self-taught painter who has been exhibiting in France since 1965 is a real pleasure. Departing from different conventional techniques, Michel LARIVIERE has deepened his research into resins, giving rise to stupefying frescoes. But how can we fail to admire his seascapes, those flowing marvels so serene and expressive with their alluring skies and mysterious far-off horizons at the mercy of the wind. An expert when it comes to perspectives, LARIVIERE evidently executes successfully his landscapes, as he does his bundles of wild flowers, which are brought to life with a confident stroke. Steeped in life, presence, and charm, with their bright impacts of colour, they point to a virtuosity that is far from ordinary. Yet it is in his portraits, with their haunted faces, and especially his crowds, that Michel LARIVIERE is bold and novel. As worried as they are worrying, these passionate and emotive beings convey an expressive solemnity in a timeless ambiance. He's all that, Michel LARIVIERE. He is sensitive and bold, and as it is said in Normandy: “He's a somebody!”
