Criticism

This is undeniably realist sculpture, and superb realist sculpture at that, born from clay and René STIVET’s hands. All these male and female bodies and busts perfectly reflect not only the artist’s remarkable technique, but also his sensitive and sensual way of conveying the beauty of postures, the accuracy of their expression and the sets of muscles crafted out of a living and captivating material. In addition, René STIVET confers his models a juvenile charm and grace that goes beyond the academic art that is always at even his experienced sculptors’ fingertips. René STIVET is never afraid of portraying what is often the most difficult and risky to reproduce: the hands and feet of his statues with all that they entail and evoke in terms of feelings, embraces... The back, with its perfect curves, the carry of the head, and the momentum in the gestures: all this is not obvious in an art form that sometimes promotes static nobility. René STIVET has chosen the strength and elegance of momentum and movement, and it is impeccable.
