Criticism

How can Arnaud de MÉZERAC be described as anything but a figurative painter? But what figurative work it is! It still amazes me, and yet I have seen a number of talented artists dedicated to realism in my career. But then again, it is not a series of hyper-realist works that A. de MÉZERAC proposes, but the undeniable result of a cultivated tradition of painting, and that he carries out with a stunning mastery of oils, watercolours and especially pastels. We cannot expect this artist to be anything but highly sought-after at exhibitions and salons; his work unleashes so much emotion and poetry! This style of painting is not in fashion, naturally, but it represents a solid and timeless artistic technique. For example, when painting female portraits, it is the confident postures that stand out, and the harmony in the faces, in the naked or clothed bodies, which create a luminous charm that the artist’s light and dexterous hand captures whatever the technique used. Arnaud De MÉZERAC does not indulge in over-elaborating folds or colour effects, rendering them a natural and essential element of the design. He conveys nothing but beauty and anatomical accuracy, and this with astonishing verve and a deliberate boldness that balance and distinguish all of his works. Of course, the animal world is no exception and bears the stamp of the artist’s excellent work. Accuracy is preserved without being carrying to excess, while both the manner of painting and the matter affect and are affected by the mind. This remarkable fluidity can also be found in his traditional still-lifes, in spacious floral arrangements that reveal an uncommon creative energy.
