Criticism

In this day and age where the smallest rod of approximately-twisted reinforced concrete or hap-hazardously welded scrap of metal can claim the title of sculpture while their makers swell with importance at being called artists, it is with infinite pleasure and real relief that I discovered the works of Sylvie KOECHLIN, whose talent allows her to write, in plain language, "sculptor" after her name. This artist follows the ideal path in carving directly into the stone via modeling and offers therefore works of all materials that are worthy of the great names in this secular art. Yet she also leaves her mark, her respect and a fine contemporary expression that is a tribute to mankind and the evocations that her talent nourishes. Indeed, Sylvie KOECHLIN, in carving directly into the stone, magnifies faces, bodies, myths and symbols with flexibility and a strict analysis of the shape. Devoid of vain details, her sculptures instead possess a powerful elegance, the serenity and sensuality of which forms a precious combination of beauty, purity and emotion. Exploiting the different shapes and surfaces that the materials provide her with, she brilliantly wears away the stone with authority and force, giving rise to soul and presence.
