Criticism
Born in Mont-Saint-Aignan, Roger Bailleul practiced drawing very young before taking an interest in perspective, hence his ultra-modern realism that is close to hyperrealism, but with that added sensitiveness and allure in the style. He has proved the extent of his talent in countless regional exhibitions, including the Salons of ‘Les Artistes Hospitaliers’ and ‘Les Artistes Indépendants Normands’ where he gave one and all the desire to discover for themselves the admirable sites that he paints in all formats. Rarely have the old streets of Rouen benefitted from so much attention; strict and carefully studied compositions bring the meticulous detail to life on the canvas as well as the appeal of these beautifully-coloured timber-framed houses.
Under Roger Bailleul’s attentive brush, the atmosphere is almost tangible and the definition of the planes is absolutely solid. Moreover, the artist dares new formats and from them draws an original vitality that can be seen in his boats sitting low in the water. With this painter, super-realism is an altogether exciting journey given his mastery of contrasts, colour and light effects, and uncanny rural and urban perspectives. The charm spills over the frame and into our minds like compelling journeys, so real are these artistic spells.
