Criticism

Contemporary painting, more than any other discipline, is intended to express the mind of its creator, whatever it might be, and more than with figurative work, that which is stupid abstraction and worshipped by the foolish faces nothing but oblivion and nothingness. On the other hand, talented artists have a duty to contend with comparisons and at times recognition from their peers. Fanny Jaussaud chose the difficult path of abstraction, not out of antagonism or evasion, but because her decision as a self-taught artist powerfully drove her towards this means of pictorial expression which allows her, or at least this is what I presume, to convey the depths of her character and desire for vitality. This artist, or any artist for that matter, cannot paint works that are so well-structured without absolute inner harmony, and this is where Fanny Jassaud excels: within large limits, she coordinates vast expanses that she dresses with a sober and personal palette of colours, and which reflect dynamism and her thoughts. Indeed, inspired by that which enthuses or torments her, she is led towards these limitless compositions which, empowered with wide movements and luminosity, incorporate streaked, rough and haunting materials. Deep mineral or precious nuances express strength and desire within a composition whose geometric and circular impulses activate a passionate encounter with this exceptional soul.
