Criticism

Sculptor Bertrand Catherine proclaims loud and clear that drawing incited him to practice his art, which confirms my opinion on the subject! After three years at the School of Fine Arts in Caen and looking to stamp engraver Jacques Gautier, the artist confirmed the sum and substance of that which brings life to his sculptures, which are almost exclusively carved directly into stone and worked with as much respect as talent, not forgetting real boldness. And it is indeed thanks to sketching that Bertrand Catherine highlights the quality and originality of his works, the volumes of which are perpetuated through his hands and tools. The material, in its different aspects, never leaves the artist indifferent, and many of his creations are the result of his perspicacity and also judicious use of the substance, and the veins, nuances and hardness that characterizes it. B. Catherine therefore always creates his works in accordance to the exemplary purity of line that defines the mass and its contours. And his creative generosity means he exalts sensuality, charm, and at times daring choices, which in turn energise his creations. Abstraction is never used without reason, its realism always tending towards originality, and even the fantasy of surrealism. These well-mastered qualities allow him to compose an ensemble of works that are full of surprising and convincing lines of research. And these are born of a full-blown artist whose drawings and painting are also brilliantly executed.
