Criticism
Born in the Caen region in 1947, Bertrand de Gravée has had a solid experience since studying at the School of Fine Arts in Caen. It includes numerous and productive exhibitions when participating in the association of Independent Artists of Lower Normandy, not counting his contributions to multiple salons in France and abroad.
His painting varies between elegant realism or cubism and fluid abstraction. An attentive analyst, Bertrand de Gravée creates sound seascapes and sober landscapes where bright and captivating colours bring life to pleasant compositions. The same goes for his still-lifes which also possess a very personal stamp.
His way of conceiving studies could only lead him to sculpture, which has always been his passion. His contemporary definition of the artform is one of clean cuts, supple modelling, and appealing bronzes. This is because the artist has developed a direct, uncluttered and symbolic approach to his subjects, whether they be figures of lovers, well-observed bestiary or nudes. The latter are steeped in a decisive and mobile grace as well as being sensual and almost provocative with their bold and carefully-studied poses.
