Criticism

One only has to look at Serge GOBBÉ’s paintings to notice his pictorial bravery and see that this artist has been deeply marked by the personality of his father. The daring fairground entertainer instilled within him not only courage, but also the value of that which is exceptional. Right from his first works, which were publicity posters and banners made with his German friend Armand using enamel paint and tar, Serge GOBBÉ revealed an artistic personality made of power and a social conscience. His stinging brushstroke conveys the concerns and essence of beings, and their passions, sorrows, and hopes. There is no affectation or flattery with this artist: his eye perceives the subject, digs deep into it and his paintbrush at times reproduces the sheer joy within it with an exhilarating or spectacular atmosphere. Yet the artist also conveys the tragic solitude, revolt and resignation of characters whose inner beauty he often highlights with colours that are strong and lined with elation. Behind this image of a daring painter lies a kind and devoted man who constantly participates in artistic exhibitions, co-organising for example the salon Rencontres de l'Aubette in Saint-Léger-du-Bourg-Denis (76), to which he brings his support and energy with faith.
