Criticism
In Honfleur, where he has lived and worked for 35 years, Jean Orange, a former student of the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris and the Académie de Port-Royal, begun his artistic career as an illustrator in a high-class daily newspaper (Le Monde). Since his return to the shade of La Lieutenance in Honfleur, he has successfully alternated group and solo exhibitions in renowned salons and galleries as a result of the high quality and originality of his creations.
Now, backed by his training and talent, Jean Orange can allow himself to flout the strict rules of academic realism, and, once freed of them, create a personality that defines him as a highly talented contemporary artist, and a painter full of elegant boldness. His sheer and vigorous colours brilliantly respond to his distinctive stroke, which he applies with a knife and roller.
Hence his sound expression and its intrinsic energy, which is highlighted with remarkable effects of light and matter. Against this background, Jean Orange perceptively places appealing subjects, which are well-presented thanks to his deep sensitivity and confident, evocative brushstroke. And so he masters sites and beings, as well as floral compositions, in which he brings into being unknown beauties in his world of space and nuances.
