Christine ROBINSON (XO)

Criticism

While so many artists, quite rightly at times, lay claim to a personal and instinctive creativity, Christine Robinson, who signs her works XO, does not fear referring back to the long and strict contemporary art instruction which she received over many years from Denis Godefroy and Jean-Pierre Bourquin. A number of high quality solo exhibitions and noteworthy participations in appreciated salons, such as the one in Elbeuf for example, have won her awards attesting to her talent. Just look: when XO is enthralled by the sea or ‘sea gardens’, with an infinitely sensitive brushstroke that explores light over charming successive planes, she creates a world of shapes and authentic evocations of colour. The artist is also able to dramatise these when she constructs and boldly frames expressive and troubling marine horizons. Powerful and sombre movements combine in an analysis which affronts the elements in a shadowy dynamic. Yet the artist also creates and describes shapes and colours as well as radiant and surprising faces with a bold and inventive pictorial freedom. This is elegantly personalised with her nuances in works where figuration and abstraction provide a spell-binding vision: that of the eternal painting.
