Criticism
Originally from Paris and now living in Normandy, Geneviève Karam has made use of all the technical skills she acquired at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts and the Ecole des Arts Appliqués et des Métiers d’Art in Paris in the various exhibitions she has held since 1995. In particular, she has rediscovered the value of the painting support by choosing to avoid working solely on the surface of the canvas and by painting on the reverse of the chassis, with the ridges serving as a frame. She also uses old worn out sheets and cheesecloths, which justifies her research on transparency. I have certainly come across works created in this fashion, but with her effective use of just three basic colours, Geneviève Karam creates a homogeneity in her evocative and carnal artwork. Her pieces are coherent in the sense that the fabric is considered as an important element of the composition. The cellular evocations that these textures inspire are conveyed by the harmony of warm colours and their serene and flowing beauty. The quivering suppleness of these sensual shapes engages the mind and compliments the artist’s vision of the infinitely small and the stellar universe in attractive and mysterious paintings. What is exceptional is the timeless and intangible quality in Geneviève Karam’s work, and her novel compositions, which hold a fascinating appeal and are full of elegance, spiritual quests and continual discoveries.
