Criticism

Since I began examining paintings by authors who display discernment and originality whatever their artistic tendency, each discovery has been a constantly renewed delight, one that has systematically accompanied every exhibition. I do not know whether it is due to any particular mental gymnastics, but the diverse artworks gradually piece together to create, not a cumbersome style, but an outlook, a vision that is transformed into powerfully evocative images thanks to the talent of this Breton-born artist from Honfleur. Jean-Claude Lechevallier has judiciously kept his pictorial passion and attained a realism full of admiration and emotion, its fluidity and suppleness leaving the door open to increasingly daring developments. It suffices to see his palette, which reveals an easy mastery of light and shadow, which is applied in flowing sweeps. Bold perspectives shimmer, sculpted by light, beaches are littered with rocks, forming smooth masses in the foreground, and planes of vision are enlivened by intensified colours. What is more, Jean-Claude Lechevallier is never found wanting in terms of his characters, which sparsely people his themes. His compassionate vision captures the solid proportions of bodies in all situations and his knowledge of harmony conveys a vivid sense of emotion and naturalness. It is this that makes his work exceptional, especially since his skilful use of colour keeps pace with his drive, and this, throughout his masterfully varied artwork.
