What is striking upon discovering Marie-Laure Letrou-Bertaut’s work as a whole is the deep sense of harmony that reigns within. This remarkable landscapist and colourist attended the Fine Arts School of Caen for several years, and, combining rigour with relentless vitality, the artist composes artworks with a refreshing and fiery palette of colours, skillfully classifying shades in a subtle hierarchy of lines and perspective. Having gained complete familiarity with landscapes, the artist manages to establish a narrative liaison piece after piece. So whether it be a marine, rural or natural scene, each painting seems to tell, through the realism of its incarnation, a story of not only the present but also the past. And so the daily lives of Breton fishermen unfold before our eyes through structured silhouettes. And signs of winter quiver with a nonchalant light, enhanced by melodious nuances that seem to evoke the exquisite charm of a Sisley, a dusk of meditative beauty, or a well constructed road lined with trees of leaves flecked with flame. Working exclusively with oil paints in a solidly mastered technique, she liberates the brush using bright, fiery colouring. Her energetic and exciting pictorial approach is laced with an intuitive and keen perception of the elements (sea, earth, and sky), which she transfers to the canvas. Marie-Laure Letrou-Bertaut’s work is a Proustian stroll within a lyrical and sincere style of impressionism.
