Criticism
Born of Italian parents, Danièle Bernini came into the world in Toulon at the time when Europe was in the middle of world conflict. Demonstrating gifts for drawing and painting at an early age, she was encouraged in this field right from primary school, and excelled. Her secondary school years would confirm her artistic talent, which was recognised with numerous awards. When in higher education, which she pursued in Grenoble, she signed up for evening classes at the Fine Arts School. This irresistible attraction to the visual arts was something that would never quite leave her.
The themes that Danièle Bernini treats in her paintings (by which I mean her canvases) introduce scenes of present-day life. She enjoys depicting characters in those moments of letting go: a young woman on her balcony; another sitting on her apartment patio; youngsters wandering through a Christmassy scene at nightfall; the back view of a man casually walking towards the sea; a young mother and her son relaxing in a garden, and other moments of intimacy and solitude stolen from the relentless march of time. These paintings emanate an impression of serenity, which contrast with her depiction of a street full of motorised vehicles. The fact that it is seen from a high-rise building further accentuates the feeling of overcrowding that we experience at rush hour.
The ambiance of night-time, totally void of human presence, was the inspiration for one of the painter’s more radical pieces. In the pale light from lampposts, a fundamentally urban décor creates an atmosphere of lonely abandon. A little on the fringes of these themes, and quite unexpected in terms of subject matter, is a mother-and-child image with a mobile telephone. Set in an environment that is quietly reminiscent of cubism, it introduces a note of irony in the otherwise very urban world.
Danièle Bernini’s artworks on paper stem from a wholly different source, and celebrate the power of the imagination in a resolutely graphic style. Here we discover the subtle interweavings of winged figures. Birds of all species (peacocks, ibises, herons, gulls, and other specimens) fill delicate compositions in magical colours. The vigour of the drawing is immediately noticeable. It is undoubtedly in this line of research that D. Bernini proves the most creative. We cannot help but praise her for its freshness and abstract elegance.
