Criticism

Thanks be to Normandy, because artists are so warmly welcomed here, and their talent so well promoted. Bernard Gineste, a former student of the Ecole des Arts Appliqués in Paris, is a perfect example in this respect, and his artwork has embellished, for over a quarter of a century now, the most prestigious exhibitions in Upper and Lower Normandy, not mentioning some of the most highly-esteemed Parisian salons. A teacher of applied arts, Bernard Gineste personifies the passionate and friendly creator, discretely sowing conviviality around him amongst the local artists and lending his talent to many of their initiatives. His oils, pastels, and charcoal paintings represent the best of what we expect from a figurative style of quality, and this undoubtedly demonstrates the value of a skillfully rendered reality, despite all the appalling efforts made by many so-called creators. A far cry from the ridiculous conventions in fashion today, Bernard Gineste conveys what the motifs harbour in terms of emotion and evocation, whether it be a question of the most sensual little nude or an enormous and expressive decorative panel. His painting is lively and well-executed, his drawings full of confidence, but how I love and respect his pastels that are full of light and charm, and where a perfectly mastered strength is appealing without compromising their value.
