  • Criticism

The Pays de Bray where Catherine Bailleul was born counts a fair few artists among its inhabitants. But the Pays de Caux, where she lives and works, is nevertheless not to be outdone. It would appear that the picturesque rural areas of Normandy attract talent, and in fact offer a prime pool of creativity. Catherine Bailleul began dabbling in painting in 1986, but 10 years later decided to work alone, and was able to tackle the host of regional salons that flourish between the Seine and Manche. It was here that she met experienced and welcoming artists such as the excellent François Burel, who exhibits her work regularly at his Fecamp exhibition “La Grand’Voile”. The numerous and flattering awards that Catherine Bailleul wins demonstrate, if proof was needed, the quality of her work and sound judgment of her peers and followers. Whilst revealing an almost cubist analysis of perspectives, her paintings shine with a power that enhances not only the disposition of the most ordinary and familiar of motifs, but also the studied harmony of colours, and particularly the blues, which are well-nuanced and underlined with bright scarlet impacts. Yport, the Pays de Caux, small boats and cliffs are celebrated by means of Catherine Bailleul’s meaningful brushstroke, not forgetting her daring and supple play of movement, or the ease with which she brings life to these pure and appealing works.
