Criticism

José Billaux’ paintings are made for you if you love dreamily realistic, almost surrealist works, where contemporary fairy tales are placed in the most unlikely places. The artist transcends these with a true flourish of atmosphere and a very solid technique. This is not hyperrealism despite first appearances. It’s more than that: indeed, if José Billaux, being a great specialist of the fine arts profession, meticulously reproduces objects of everyday life as well as the usual streets, locations and landscapes, thanks to his feverishly virtuosic brush and his palette of surprising and novel colours, he communicates a whole magical mood as well as a mysterious atmosphere, which is at times cheerful, at others dramatic. Embedded within this apparently classical figurative style are boldly contemporary effects that blur the reality of the motif and reveal a sensation of secrecy. The natural is transformed into strange and sumptuous sights, which assume positions and release impacts that leave one speechless from surprise and wonder. Light, contrasts and blends melt into one another to better play with the tangible world and meet with a style with which the artist dares define himself thanks to his biting and jubilatory talent.
