Criticism

Mankind has been fascinated by iron since the second millennium BC. Allying strength and fragility as it crosses time, the element transforms and translates into numerous appearances and asperities; the tell-tale cracks and scars left upon it by its passage at the heart of civilisation. With its immeasurable beauty and unique shape, the slag of this precious metal offers a fascinating image of the element when it resists time, and many are the artists who pay it tribute. Much more than a tribute, sculptor Patrice Delaune from Le Havre harbours a veritable carnal, vibrant passion for this material, which he would discover during a metallurgy course. From that moment on, the fate of both artist and metal would be sealed, resulting in a sculptural fusion where poetry, subtlety and abstraction communicate together. Working primarily from recycled materials, Patrice Delaune lets his lyrical imagination roam, seizing in each piece the trace of a “statement” or emotion to transcribe. This is because the artist’s strength lies in seeking, within each element that inspires him, another self to bring body and soul to his work. And so the sculpture takes shape in a play of light and shadow, curves and arcs, space and balance. There is magic in abstraction and in the instant representation of an image, reflection or emotion, which in turn clamour like a shower of haikus in the ear of timelessness. It is in this spirit that Patrice Delaune’s sculptures express and demonstrate the rebirth of this metal. Even if the material imposes decisions upon the artist, his degree of technical perfection is such that the aesthetic/mechanical balance is in perfect harmony. The creative process itself spreads over four phases, namely cleaning, cutting, bending iron under heat, and patination to preserve the material’s authenticity. The reason that Patrice Delaune’s artworks are paid so much attention is because they awaken us to the fragile balance of life and the elementary. Such is this master’s art, born in the secrecy of his workshop, where he revives metals whose stories resemble our own.
