Criticism
Jacques Berbez from Châlons-sur-Marne (France) passed away in 2016 at the age of seventy-six. He held a lifelong passion for drawing and painting and devoted himself to the pastel technique. In true autodidact fashion, he had no training and never had a master. His accomplished artwork is only the more exemplary for it. He portrayed his visions of an entirely reinvented world in a series of imaginary quests. His veritable exploration of dreams renews interest in this theme, which was very dear to the Surrealists in the first half of the 20th century. Using the subconscious and oneirism, the artist reveals beauty and sensuality in a visionary creation.
In his symbolic representations of fantastical architecture and landscapes, from which a human presence is rarely absent, he completely rebuilt the universe through his own perception of space and movement in an original pictorial language. With his ever bright palette of colours, he brought the art of pastels to its perfection. His precise drawings enhance his subjects’ elegance. The fluidity of his treatment of topics, which plays on transparency, allowed him to develop a dazzling and very personal style, one capable of conveying the richness of his inner world. Each artwork tells a story and engages us.
With its undeniable poetic and emotional power, Jacques Berbez’ work seeks to enchant and succeeds in doing so perfectly. His “magical realism”, which he constantly renewed much to the delight of our eyes and mind, invites us into the wonderland that is dormant in every one of us.
