He was born in Courbevoie, yet lived in Paris, is a globe-trotter due to his manual job, and an experienced high alpine mountain guide... And after all that he became a Normandy painter when, following his illness, and meeting his wife from Vernon, circumstances led Jean-Jacques GARNIER to move to Calvados. It must be said that painting and photography clearly represent a passion for this out-and-out self-taught artist who lets nobody influence his style or motifs. While it is true that he was absolutely fascinated by Van Gogh’s work, it is because it coincided exactly with his love of matter and colours. Imaginative rather than a realist, he is undeniably gifted with an innate and lively will. Yet, although he pays great attention to nature, patient and meticulous Jean-Jacques Garnier always searches for the symbolism in elements, beings, and flora. He devotes a great deal of time to objective research into paint and colours, using natural pigments, supports made of dried leaves, linen, slate, and porcelain, as well as photographs, to which he brings a poetic quality. And then Jean-Jacques Garnier also enjoys reinventing ancestral techniques and nothing motivates him more than the education that ancient cave art can provide.
