Michel Besnard, a former graphic arts teacher at the Regional School of Fine Arts in Rouen, possesses a rare ensemble of creative talents, ranging from typographing novel print characters, to engraving polychrome wood, and painting, printmaking and sculpting. Here is an artist also fascinated by the history of writing, and who displays exceptional brilliance in his wood engravings. He ardently and loquaciously conveys his graphic and chromatic universe through his efficient choice of successive colours, obtaining precise and infinite nuances thanks to the high-quality and essentially pure printing inks used by printing company and newspaper "Affiches de Normandie".
Starting from sinuous and mysterious drawings, Michel Besnard’s fantasy and narrative world emerges, revealing its sources to be all that is most evocative in art. And that’s not forgetting his flavourful statues of rigidified paper, whose completion in bronze is quite simply astonishing.
