  • Criticism

Xiu Chen was born in China. If there is a style of painting that has become established over time, and which has allied precision drawing with creative thinking down the centuries, it is Chinese painting. Its figurative motifs are never weighed down with superfluity and, by following religious precepts, this art also brings to life vast landscapes while at the same time conjuring the innate richness of a permanent and deep mysticism. In all likelihood, it is by soaking up this ancestral concept that Chen Xiu, a painter who was born on the bank of the Yellow River but who has lived in Normandy for 10 years, succeeds in painting and calligraphing works in which the Chinese sources brilliantly compliment the traditional monochrome backgrounds. The artist has left behind the overly present realism in favour of a formless suggestion of rhythms, shapes, birds and flowers. Perfectly elegant, they are set against silky grey or scarlet backgrounds, which are dear to this exceptional culture of balance, sensations, evocative serenity and subtle and fluctuating effects.
