Criticism

Between shadows and reflections, the artist is on the lookout for the slightest vibrations of the world. It would appear that the landscape is always welcome at her table. It lets itself be caressed by the eyes, assuming a particular colour at each season. After the blooming of tender greens with their host of silky nuances comes the bright, heady yellow of rapeseed, followed by the celestial and purifying blue of flax, the soft amber dance of grasses (orchard grass, fescue, bluegrass and wild oats), the intoxicating purples of autumn and then the heavy silence of snow, where twigs and delicate bird footprints evoke a hopping calligraphic script from far Eastern shores. It is no longer clear whether it is Caty creating the artwork or the artwork bringing her into being. For her, painting represents a constant spiritual journey, a way of recognising the reassuring presence of things, of penetrating into the thickness of water and the shimmering depths of the mirror showed to her every day in the bounding river nearby. In it, the wind bends images, ceaselessly reshaping them at will, revealing enchanted lands from childhood dreams. The waves are their unsettling voices. The trees provide the sound of birdsong. The white canvas is the very space where a life’s migratory adventure is played out; where the passing moment can unfurl in the sudden hiatus. Behind the translucent veil of appearances, the seaweed of dreams lets itself be captured, weaving its auburn arabesques against the fiery backdrop of the sky. Unsurprisingly, poetry plays an important part in the artist’s personal life, bubbling up from those slight flutters that can be perceived only by the heart, which is always one step ahead. At times, even a brief author’s quotation can inspire a painting and as I write this, I recall the words that came to me when walking one spring morning: The height of effacement: it had become so light that the flowers alone saw it. Caty Banneville’s world celebrates the inherent grace of flowers, the lightness of stems stirred by the breath of the breeze, and the countless gurglings of springs in a portrait of eternity. It has the radiant and regenerative sensuality of transience and the elusive quality of temporality. Gazing at her field of rapeseed, the observer has the feeling of being immersed in a powdery bath of pollen, as though the pigments that she grinds were rising into the atmosphere without her knowing, like a perfume dissolving the chains of time. It is like a gentle murmur that comes from both outside and within; a soft burbling that renews everything; a fragrance that gives you wings. I could conclude this appraisal by saying that, for me, Caty Banneville is a great painter.
