Criticism
Escaping overly simplistic classifications, Claudine Loquen’s artwork restores all evocative power to the image by drawing us directly into the bewildering world of dreams and wonders.
It is not surprising that books and poetry hold a special place in her life. Along with cinema, they constitute the spring from which her imagination has always drank. Yet she also draws her themes from the history of mankind, with an evident predilection for tragic or romantic fates, such as the lives of Joan of Arc, Ann and Mary Boleyn, Joséphine de Beauharnais, and Empress Elisabeth of Austria. Above all, Claudine Loquen loves telling or appropriating stories and, being a painter and illustrator, she does this using lines and colours, enjoying alternating between paper, canvas, and wood, between inks and the mixed technique, and making use of collage, calligraphy and offcuts of high-quality fabrics provided by a friend. This serves to remind her that her family counted a few weavers among its ranks.
In her charming house in Rouen, which is discretely hidden in one of the oldest and most picturesque streets of the town (in the Middle Ages, the building housed a poster designer’s workshop), Claudine Loquen seems to live outside of time, surrounded by the books of her emblematic heroes: Jane Eyre, Nadja, and Martin Eden. The latter plunges us into the wild and harsh world of Jack London, the intrepid explorer of great snowy wildernesses and author of White Fang. It is not at all surprising, then, that wolves currently play a role in the incisive, fairytale imagery employed by Claudine, who claims to have drawn little from her evening classes at fine arts school: “In fact, I learnt everything myself by going to museums and reading art books,” she told me, somewhat nostalgically. Yet is drawing from masterpieces not the best way to get straight to the heart of things? Humble and sensitive in nature, but driven by an uncompromising energy, Claudine Loquen is one of those for whom life is still the supreme lesson teacher, because unlike qualifications, life confronts you with yourself and the salt of humanity. Having successively practiced several professions during her career, including that of teacher, Claudine Loquen has learnt and gained much, every new encounter being a possible opportunity for discovery, progress and re-assessment. Only those who think they know everything spurn the lessons that each passing day offers. After all, in the eyes of eternity, we are but perpetual apprentices.
In the field of painting, Claudine Loquen plainly asserts her passion for Berthe Morisot, Emil Nolde, Charlotte Salomon, Paula M. Becker and also Gaston Chaissac, a key figure of Outsider Art. These names alone are enough to situate her own expectations in terms of artistic expression. Yet they define not so much a style as a state of mind. Expressionism, among other influences, fuels a part of her research, which it would be wrong to assimilate with naïve art, that movement which sometimes resembles an unbelievable catch-all and amalgamates good and bad alike. The value of Claudine Loquen’s work lies in the undeniable freshness of her inspiration, which is ever renewed by the authentic vision of childhood that has tirelessly accompanied and guided her. In Philippe Quinta’s book that she so beautifully illustrated (Comme en semant) I came across a phrase that, in my eyes, captures the full flavour of her approach: “You are moved by the smallest of things.” This ability to grasp the tiniest of objects or movements in life points to a desire to magnify every instant. “I seek the gold of time,” said André Breton shortly before breathing his last. Surely nothing is more deeply moving than this quest! The poet’s secret lies in finding it without realising.
